You know how we all have those things that we know we should do, but we never get around to doing them? It’s either not the right time, or you have to do something more important, or you’re just not in the mood, or you’ve found a reason to procrastinate again.
I have a bad habit of procrastinating a lot. Sometimes for days, sometimes for weeks, sometimes for months, and sometimes I’m afraid, for years.
I’ve found though that one way I can fight back against this habit, is to try and make that thing I want to do, a bit more enjoyable, even pleasurable.
An example of this is how I’ve always wanted to wake up super early in the morning. I would do it for a few days, and then fall back to my usual habit of sleeping late and correspondingly either waking up later than I wanted, or waking up really groggy. Neither was ideal.
But then I added a bit of a morning ritual to when I wake up. Each morning when I wake up, I slowly make coffee. And then I read something while enjoying my coffee. No matter what, I always try and follow this ritual. There have been only a few days, when because of some really crazy deadline, I’ve had to wake up and open my laptop straightaway.
This simple ritual has made my mornings the best part of my day. Waking up early, when the world hasn’t yet started, when the sun is only starting to come up, as I sip my coffee and read, is really so so nice 🙂 And this makes it so much easier for me to wake up early in the morning. Because I know that if I don’t, I’ll miss out on this thing that I enjoy so much.

Another example of this, is how I’ve been wanting to do a better job of writing down my thoughts and become more self-aware. But I’ve never really done it regularly. Until I decided to invest in a good fountain pen! 🙂 Fountain pens make it so much more fun to write! Seriously 🙂 And because I like it so much, it makes me want to write more!! Haha 🙂
Atomic Habits by James Clear is a great read by the way, on how you can form new habits.
Is there something that you’ve been procrastinating on for a long time? Can you think of a way to make it more enjoyable? Try it and it might just work! Or drop a comment about what you’ve been procrastinating on, and we can brainstorm ideas together for how you can get over the hump 🙂
