Twenty creative materials to use in your bookbinding projects and DIY books

Bookbinding is one of those arts where once you get the hang of it, there is literally no limit to the materials you can use to make new and unique books. Whether you are a professional bookbinder or a DIY enthusiast, there are many interesting materials that you can use to add unique touches to your bookbinding projects.

What’s also great is that you don’t have to look far to find a lot of these materials, and a fair number of them should already be present in your house! I’m sharing a few ideas here, I’m sure there are tons of other materials that you can use.

Washi: Washi is a type of Japanese paper tape that comes in a wide range of colors and patterns. It is perfect for decorating the covers of your books, as well as for reinforcing the spine. You can also use washi as the paper for your pages inside your book, just like the way bookbinders did in Japan centuries ago!

Fabric: Fabric can be used to cover the covers of your books, giving them a unique and tactile feel. You can use scraps of fabric, or even old clothing, to create a one-of-a-kind look.

Paint: Paint can be used to create custom designs on the covers of your books. You can use acrylic or watercolor paints, or even spray paint, to create a variety of effects.

Embroidery thread: Embroidery thread can be used to add decorative stitching to the covers of your books. This is a great way to add a unique touch to your bookbinding projects, and it is also a great way to use up scraps of thread.

Beads: Beads can be used to decorate the covers of your books, or even to create a unique closure system. They can also be used to create a decorative spine.

Buttons: Buttons can be used to create a closure system for your books, or as a decorative element on the covers. They can be sewn on or glued in place.

Wood: Why not use the wood to create a really strong, unique and rustic book cover? You can leave the wood as-is, or decorate it with carvings or paint.

Shells: Shells can be used to create a beachy feel to your books. They can be glued in place or sewn on.

Printed circuit boards (PCBs): OMG. Can you imagine a book whose cover is a PCB?!! Old PCBs can be used to cover the covers of your books, creating a unique and modern look.

Metal sheets: Metal sheets can be used to create a shiny and durable cover for your books. It can be used in combination with other materials, such as paint or fabric, to create a variety of effects. You’d need to some level of comfort with working with metal before doing this though!

Old bottle caps: Create a statement about the environment and sustainability, by reusing old bottle caps to decorate your book covers!

Ceramics: Who said ceramic can only be used for pottery? A flat sheet of glazed ceramic could make for a great book cover!

These are just a few of the many creative materials that can be used in bookbinding projects. The possibilities are endless, so don’t be afraid to get creative and experiment with different materials to create a one-of-a-kind book. Remember, the key is to have fun and to let your imagination run wild!
